Residential Energy Efficiency Assessments

A residential energy efficiency assessment is an integral part of all new building designs. It provides a comprehensive evaluation of the thermal performance for a particular residence or building.

Every new residential building design in Australia needs to meet the requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) as part of certification. At Building Energy Ratings & Advice (BERA), we understand the requirements for certification and are qualified to provide energy efficiency assessments for both single residential buildings and multi-residential buildings.

When considering an energy efficiency assessment, it’s important to remember that it isn’t just about compliance. It also helps to reduce energy bills for the life of the building, and create a healthier, more sustainable environment for occupants.

Methods for energy efficiency assessment

Energy efficiency assessments are typically conducted during the design (not construction) phase of the project. At BERA, we’re certified to perform these assessments using a number of different methods, including:

Deemed to SatisfyDTS compares the proposed building design to a defined set of minimum requirements for insulation, glazing and so on. This is often the cheapest and simplest way to show compliance.

NatHERS Using CSIRO developed software, a computer model is generated to determine the likely temperature of every room in the house on every day of the year. Based on this, and reference standards, an assessment is made of the predicted energy use and a report detailing the star rating achieved is generated.

BASIX Residential assessments for New South Wales, incorporating water efficiency and appliance efficiency in addition to thermal performance.

BESS Statements Built Environmental Sustainability Scorecard Assessments for Victorian Councils

Depending on the state or territory the dwelling is in, there are a number of options for compliance. BERA understands the industry and regional compliance requirements, ensuring you are provided with an accurate and reliable assessment that meets all needs. Speak to us today about which option would be best for your design.

Benefits of energy efficiency assessments

There are a number of benefits to having an energy efficiency assessment conducted on your new building design. These include:

  • Compliance with regulations for energy efficiency
  • Reduction of environmental impact
  • Reduction of operational costs and energy bills
  • Increase in comfort for occupants
  • Greater understanding of energy performance
  • Potential access to incentives and grants offered by government

A residential energy efficiency assessment not only ensures your design meets minimum requirements, but it can also allow for the evaluation of how energy efficient the building will be in operation. Having an assessment conducted gives you peace of mind that your design is meeting environmental obligations and providing occupants with an energy efficient, thermally comfortable home.

At BERA, we understand the importance of accurate assessments and provide a thorough, comprehensive service with every job. Our team is fully qualified to conduct assessments according to the relevant state or national regulations and are up to date with industry best practices.

Single Residential Buildings (Class 1A, 1B, 4 Buildings)

Every new home or major renovation must comply with the residential requirements of the NCC. It’s not uncommon for homes to require retro-fitting when a building has been completed without an assessment – speak to us if you’ve found yourself in this situation.

Residential Class 2 Building

Multi-Residential Buildings (Class 2)

Every apartment in a Class 2 building requires its own NatHERS Assessment, and then the building as a whole is given an average star rating. Discounts are available for buildings with repeated unit designs.
